As evidenced by a team picture featured prominently at the Pavilion, women's cricket at Beacon Hill Park dates back to the late 1800s. Continuing that tradition in the 21st century, the Wicket Maidens began as a co-ed cricket team in 2000, after some of the wives and girlfriends of league cricket players decided they would to play as well as watch the game.
In 2004, eight Wicket Maidens were named to the Canadian Women's National Team. Every year since, the women who play cricket in Victoria continue to for the core of Canada's squad, facing competition from the USA, Bermuda, Argentina, Brazil, and Trinidad.
Back home, you can find the Wicket Maidens plying their trade in the VDCA Midweek League, and in some weekend games against selected men's teams. There are over 20 active members and we are always on the lookout for more women to join our ranks. Our long-term goals are to establish a local Women's League, and to continue to lead the cause of women's cricket in western Canada. We cannot stress too strongly that the Wicket Maidens is a club first, and a team as a result.
The Wicket Maidens' members range in age from early teens to a 'certain' age. Our club's philosophy focuses on working together to expand each player's skill set, and challenging ourselves and other teams, all while having a great time learning the sport of cricket and all that that entails in a social sense.
We practice regularly (and enthusiastically) on Friday evenings between 6-8pm at Beacon Hill Park, and usually gather for a debrief in the Pavilion afterwards. Anyone interested in joining the Wicket Maidens for camaraderie, training, and/or playing is invited to contact any one of us (details below) of, better yet, to just drop by!
